Predation on pirarucu larvae by opportunistic fish species

چکیده

ABSTRACT One of the constraints in pirarucu, Arapaima gigas farming is reproduction captivity, due to inconsistent number spawning events per reproductive cycle, thus, unreliable availability juvenile fish. This a first-hand report on predation pirarucu larvae by opportunistic fish species breeding pond. Fish samples were collected for stomach content analysis from pirarucu-breeding pond with reported larvae. We obtained 61 different (Tetragonopterus sp., Astyanax bimaculatus, Moenkhausia intermedia, Hoplias malabaricus, and Apistogramma sp.). Tetragonopterus sp. stomachs had highest frequency occurrence (83.3%), followed A. bimaculatus (7.4%). The relationship between feeding behaviour these their upon offspring discussed.

Size-specific predation on marine invertebrate larvae.

Predation on planktonic larval stages is frequently a major source of mortality for the offspring of benthic marine invertebrates. Mortality rate likely varies with larval size and developmental stage, but few experiments have measured how these factors affect predation rates. I used experimental reductions in egg size to test how variation in larval size affects the likelihood of predation dur...

Fish predation on a Daphnia hybrid species complex: A factor explaining species coexistence?

Recent studies on the life histories of Daphnia hybrids and their parental species have revealed that hybrids can combine an intermediate size with a relatively high reproductive rate, which might explain their success in many European lakes. Based on this information, we formulated the temporal hybrid superiority hypothesis to explain the coexistence of parental species and their hybrids. Our ...

Anthropogenic noise increases fish mortality by predation

Noise-generating human activities affect hearing, communication and movement in terrestrial and aquatic animals, but direct evidence for impacts on survival is rare. We examined effects of motorboat noise on post-settlement survival and physiology of a prey fish species and its performance when exposed to predators. Both playback of motorboat noise and direct disturbance by motorboats elevated ...

Copepod predation on Anopheles quadrimaculatus larvae in rice fields.

Cyclopoid copepods and mosquito larvae were surveyed in southwestern Louisiana rice fields. Almost every rice field had a natural population of Mesocyclops ruttneri, Acanthocylops vernalis, or Macrocyclops albidus. Judging from the abundance of pupae, 29% of the fields were responsible for virtually all Anopheles quadrimaculatus production, apparently because larval mortality suppressed product...

Opportunistic predation by small fishes on epibiota of jetty pilings in urban waterways

Epibiota were sampled on nine small jetties in the tidal, urban canals of south-east Queensland, Australia, to determine if the small fishes that are associated with these jetties prey on the epibiota on the pilings of the jetties and whether these fishes depend on the epibiota as a source of food. Epibiota was dominated by barnacles, filamentous and foliose algae and ranged in thickness from 4...
